New guidebook to walks around Renfrewshire

A guidebook has been launched which details 10 of the walks which showcase some of the best of Renfrewshire’s environment, heritage and wildlife.The guidebook entitled ‘Out There:10 Walks around Renfrewshire’ was written by Nick Wright and produced jointly by Renfrewshire Council and Scottish Natural Heritage.
The booklet includes a variety of walks - gentle strolls around Renfrew and its rivers, Paisley and its parks and a moorland hike around Locher Water. Among the other walks listed are Johnstone to Paisley through Gleniffer Braes, round and about Kilbarchan, Erskine and the Clyde and Castle Semple, Lochwinnoch
The route of each walk is accompanied by photography and information on heritage, natural history, public transport, pubs, restaurants and places to visit. There is also general guidance on appropriate clothing and footwear and information on further sources to find out more about the major attractions in each locality.
Councillor Jackie Green, Renfrewshire Council’s Economic Development spokesperson, said,“Renfrewshire has a fascinating heritage. Hopefully, this new guidebook will help local people and visitors alike to find out more about Renfrewshire and take the time to visit the many sights and attractions that the area can offer. I’m sure it will bring economic benefits through encouraging people to visit the area.”
Councillor Ian McMillan, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Housing, Environment and Community Safety Policy Board said,“Renfrewshire’s environment is very varied. Walking is an ideal way to get close to our scenery, history and wildlife and this informative and entertaining guidebook will certainly stimulate interest in finding out more about the area while getting fitter at the same time.”
Geoff Atkins, Access Officer with Scottish Natural Heritage which funded the guidebook said, “ We are pleased to be involved in such a booklet which encourages people to enjoy the outdoors.The text and the photography really encourage the readers to go out and see the sights for themselves.”
Councillors, members of walking groups and representatives of countryside organisations gathered on Saucel Hill in Paisley to launch the guidebook.
9000 copies of the free guidebook have been printed and are available at council and tourism offices, libraries, and from Renfrewshire Council’s Department of Planning and Transport tel 0141 842 5811.
