Renfrewshire was ringing with the sound of music as over 270 primary pupils from across the area took part in the prestigious Primary Proms concert.
Performing at this year’s concert were primary five children from Auchenlodment, Heriot, Lochwinnoch, Ralston, St Fergus and St Paul’s primaries and a junior brass band, junior string orchestra and a clarsach group. Held in Paisley Town Hall on 20 June 2006, the concert was attended by John Rooney, Director of Education and Leisure, guests and parents of the performing children.
The Primary Proms concert is an annual event which celebrates the musical achievements of pupils who have received music tuition as part of the Youth Music Initiative. Funded by the Scottish Executive and the Scottish Arts Council, the Initiative was set up to give all pupils in Scotland one year of free music tuition before they reach Primary 6. All children in Renfrewshire have received tuition in either singing, guitar, samba, the recorder, the penny whistle, woodwind, brass, stringed or percussion instruments.
John Rooney, Director of Education and Leisure, said: “The concert was wonderful and reflected the hard work put in by the pupils involved. The Youth Music Initiative is an outstanding scheme which encourages pupils to get involved in music. We clearly have a lot of musically talented children in Renfrewshire and this programme has been a great way of developing their skills.
Our Primary Proms are unique in that they show the work that was being done every week in our primary classrooms and is an ideal way to celebrate the achievements of all involved. The pupils clearly enjoyed this musical experience and I am sure that they will continue to develop their new-found skills.”
