Renfrewshire council has welcomed the decision of the Scottish Executive that tolls on the Erskine bridge are to be abolished.
The announcement was made by transport minister Tavish Scott in a statement to the Scottish Parliament.
Renfrewshire council leader Jim Harkins said: "The abolition of the tolls is a tremendous boost for Renfrewshire and indeed the economy of the west of Scotland. Renfrewshire council has long campaigned for this outcome in partnership with groups within Renfrewshire, neighbouring authorities and local MSP's. We made a strong case on the benefits which would flow to Renfrewshire if the tolls ended. There was an overwhelming case for abolition on economic, transport and environmental grounds. The Erskine bridge is different from other bridges in that its cost has long been fully repaid by the tolls over the years. I am delighted that the Scottish Executive has listened to the strength of that argument."
Councillor Jackie Green, Renfrewshire council's economic development spokesperson, said: "This decision is tremendous news for the local and regional economy. I think the abolition of the tolls will encourage investment in the area from existing companies and firms which are looking for a new base to expand from."
