Renfrewshire’s special star turns out for launch of the Provost’s Community Awards

Home > News and Events > News - release archive > 2006 > July

Renfrewshire’s special star, Sharon Henderson, will turn up to help Provost Ronnie Burns officially launch the 2006/2007 search to find the people with the biggest hearts in Renfrewshire on Friday 21 July.

Left to right: Kieran O'Toole, Q96, Jim Price, Sharon Henderson, Raye Wyllie and Margaret Rhodden, Flexi Care.
Sharon, 33, of Paisley, was the winner of last year’s Special Needs Adult Award for her determination to live a normal life and for her commitment to charity. She is now enjoying an independent lifestyle after years of living in residential care. Sharon works part-time at a supermarket and fundraises for a community charity.

To mark the tenth year of the awards, Provost Burns is calling on everyone who lives or works in Renfrewshire to nominate just one person who deserves a special thank you for their contribution to society. Whether it be by helping others, making a difference in the community or by overcoming physical and emotional hurdles, we want to hear from everyone who makes Renfrewshire a happier and better place. As an added incentive, the nominators of all of the award winners receive free British Airways flights and money for a weekend in London plus money for a charity of their choice.

Posters and nomination forms are being widely distributed throughout libraries, schools, council offices and voluntary organisations for anybody to pick up. Downloadable versions of the nomination form are also available here (Link removed when nominations closed). Anyone who needs help filling out their form or wants one sent out to their home should phone Drew Gibson or Mairi Brown on 0141 840 3363/3706. The closing date for nominations is Tuesday 22 September.

Renfrewshire’s Provost Ronnie Burns, said: “I would love if everyone who lives or works in Renfrewshire took five minutes to think of someone they could nominate for an award. The awards recognise the efforts and achievements of these wonderful nominees who are such an asset to the community.

“I urge everyone to think about those who they respect and admire and make their nomination. Just filling in a nomination form can make a real difference, not only will it make the person feel valued and cared for, it could also stand you in good stead for an all expenses paid trip to London.”

Past winner of the Special Needs Child Award David Hopkins was so delighted to win his award and trip to London, that he wrote a special letter of thanks to Provost Burns. (Please see below for a copy of David’s letter).

Seven categories of award are available for nomination this year. They are for the Special Needs Child (up to age 14), supported by Glasgow Airport Ltd, the Young Person with Special Needs (14-18 years), supported by Provost Burns and Mrs Burns, the Special Needs Adult, supported by Scottish Power, the Volunteer Community Worker, supported by Ciba Speciality Chemicals PLC, the Achievement Award, supported by Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce Ltd, the Carers Award, supported by the former Provost Nancy Allison JP and the Good Citizen Award, which is supported by Diageo and Acre Industrial and Cleaning Services Ltd.

All people shortlisted and their nominator(s) will be invited to the Awards Ceremony at Paisley Town Hall on 9th February 2007.

Letter from David Hopkins to the Provost’s office

Dear Mr Gibson

We had a great time in London. The hotel was lovely, planes on time and the weather was fab!

Did lots of things in London. Went on the big wheel, took a boat down the river, visited the Tower of London, lots of walks and went to a really big toy shop!

The best bit was the Lion King! I really enjoyed it! The costumes and the animals were very real but I was not scared.

Please thank the Provost and all the people who organised it.

Lots of love
David Hopkins
