The Philatelic Congress of Great Britain make their stamp on Renfrewshire

The 88th Philatelic Congress of Great Britain took place last weekend at the Normandy Hotel, Renfrew (8 and 9 July). This is only the fourth time that this prestigious stamp collecting event has come to Scotland and only the second time in the west - previous occasions were Edinburgh in 1913 and 1993 and Glasgow in 1924. Caledonian Philatelic Society of Glasgow were the host society for this years event.
The highlight of the weekend was the ceremony on Saturday afternoon, 8 July, when four eminent collectors were invited to add their signatures to the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists. This Roll was inaugurated in 1921 and the first signatory was King George V - founder of the Royal Philatelic Collection still maintained today by HM The Queen. At the same ceremony, the 2006 Congress Medal was presented to Mr Kenneth E Norris of Hamilton for his considerable services to the hobby.
The Congress was opened on Friday morning by Councillor Anne Hall, representing Renfrewshire Council. Councillor Hall attended the signing ceremony on the Saturday afternoon and during the banquet kindly responded to the Toast to Renfrewshire Council.
Councillor Anne Hall, representing Renfrewshire Council, said: “It was an honour to be part of this prestigious event. As this is only the fourth time that the Congress has taken place in Scotland in the last 88 years, it was a great opportunity to profile Renfrewshire and its sights to the delegates, who had travelled here from all over the world.”
