Reid Kerr College in Paisley is fast becoming a centre of excellence for radio broadcasting training with brand new facilities and state-of-the-art digital technology. The college now boasts an in-house radio station, located within Reid Kerr’s new teaching facilities, which provides students with vital experience to enhance their qualification.
Beginning August 2006, Higher National Certificate (HNC) radio broadcasting students can benefit from regular sessions in the studio, with the course programme involving live broadcasts on the college campus and additional practical experience with a local radio station. The HNC course includes both presentation and production skills and takes candidates through the varied role of a radio broadcaster. Full-time for one year, the HNC can provide students with a unique opportunity to learn all aspects of radio broadcasting with professional and practical training delivered by college lecturers.
Former Reid Kerr radio broadcasting student Mhairi Heron has been broadcasting Renfrewshire-wide, since launching her career with Q96 radio station a couple of years ago. Originally following a career in engineering, Mhairi completed the HNC at Reid Kerr and then switched on to a new future in broadcasting. She commented recently on her success since leaving college.
“When I finally launched into radio, I realised that the qualifications gained at Reid Kerr had provided me with all of the relevant experience that I needed. With a wide range of topics delivered such as scripting, drama, commercial production and perfecting your sound on air, it made the transition from college life to the work place a lot more straightforward. HNC radio broadcasting was an exciting and challenging course and I would recommend it to anyone interested in following a career on the air waves"
Former radio producer for the BBC, John Collins, brings a wealth of knowledge to Reid Kerr as the course tutor and with 20 years experience in this challenging and energetic industry, John is the ideal professional trainer to deliver this programme.
John said, “as well as the HNC course, Reid Kerr are now offering training packages for radio stations. If you are a local, community or commercial station keen to upgrade your training provision, Reid Kerr College can provide SVQ, Skillset accredited courses. We can deliver programmes designed to update your trainees’ skills, identify your training needs and produce a comprehensive training package including all aspects of law and health & safety.”
Working in partnership with Skillset, a lead body for the broadcast industries, Reid Kerr have already completed a number of training courses for established DJs, professionals and members of the local community and station management. The programmes use only work-based practises, professional standards and live broadcasts as course materials and assessments.”
Alasdair Smith, of Skillset Scotland added, “These courses signify a great step forward in our partnership and a massive endorsement both of Reid Kerr’s delivery and the Skillset standards.”
